Coffee Table Rebuild

This table was unfinished by a past student who left behind some drawings and most of the pieces.  I remade some of the pieces to account for minor design changes and remade others due to twisting over the years in storage.  The most technically difficult operation was the glue-up of the diagonal leg braces which are tension.

Inside Out and Multi Axis Turning

It's extremely fun with experiment mentally and on paper with what geometries you can turn with these two methods.

I use these as bookends.

'Boîte-en-valise' Inspired Display

A plain and solid form unlocks and unfolds to display miniature scale models of other works of art.  I  enjoy origami and descriptive geometry, and I see this as a 3D visual puzzle whether in active or passive use.

I used 24 barrel hinges and 10 bd ft of 4/4 maple.

Spherical Turning

Techniques in making the perfect sphere were not heavily expanded on.  A goal was to master this one technique.

There are a lot of naturally beautiful compositions of reclaimed wood when they are formed into simple and pristine objects or bocce balls.

Sixty Piece Bowl

This was the first project I turned.  Each layer has eleven pieces of cherry and one piece of elm.  It's about 1" thick all around.

Single Ply Ping Pong Paddles

I've been playing racket sports my whole life and I'm very sensitive to muscle memory and ergonomic conditions relating to ping pong.  I'm developing a paddle that is equally good for Chinese penhold, Japanese penhold, and shakehand grips.  Weight and balance are tricky to compromise when Japanese penhold paddle forego benefits of other paddle to be extremely lightweight.  Wood species and thickness plays a driving role in the research because single ply construction is powerful and has a significant impact on the stroke.

Wet Wood Turning

I test the limits of this freshly cut apple wood on the lathe.  The wood deforms while turning and I could not sharpen the bowl gouge enough to turn any thinner.  After a few days the bowl's rim did not deform as much as I expected.  I tried to steam bend it it a higher degree of deformation but there was no change.
